The Mexican freight carrier, a subsidiary of Avianca Cargo, has outsourced its entire ULD business to specialist, Jettainer. This was announced on 08NOV22 at TIACA’s Air Cargo Forum in Miami, USA. Thanks to the deal, Jettainer cements its leading position as independent ULD manager in The Americas.

Happy faces wherever one looked at during the joint press conference of the two companies held at the Miami South Beach Convention Center. According to the deal, AeroUnion has handed over more than 800 ULDs to its new business partner, Jettainer, who is now in charge of managing the containers, pallets, and straps according to the carrier’s market and route demands. Although announced only now, this partnership went live on 01AUG22. However, the TIACA event in MIAMI was chosen for the official announcement to create an impact among the attendees and industry representatives.

Jettainer speaks Spanish
A dedicated Jettainer, ULD expert is responsible for the entire project. His native tongue is Spanish, and he is based at Mexico City Airport, AeroUnion’s central hub. In line with Jettainer’s advance in South America, all training programs and technical manuals have been translated into Spanish, to optimize services and avoid operational errors.

AeroUnion operates a fleet of two B767-200ER freighters, complemented by three Airbus A300-B4. In addition to Mexico City, the carrier links domestic destinations such as Monterrey and Guadalajara, with key destinations in North America, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York (JFK), and Central America like San José in Guatemala. All in all, 21 destinations are currently being regularly served.

Abu Dhabi-based control center monitors the entire performance
Along with parent, Avianca, the carrier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in NOV21, but stayed afloat and exited the legal process just one month later. Since then, it has pursued an aggressive growth strategy which also explains why the carrier outsourced its ULD assets in order to concentrate on its key competencies. “With Jettainer, we have found a partner who guarantees 100% and highly efficient ULD availability. At the same time, it was important to us that a high understanding of the cargo business and the necessary flexibility and customer orientation be brought in, which is fully present at Jettainer,” said Alonso Haro, Chief Executive Officer at AeroUnion at the contract announcement in Miami. The data of all ULD movements and processes converge in Jettainer's central data center in Abu Dhabi, where they are coordinated and evaluated with regard to the operational performance.

“With AeroUnion, we have added another ambitious cargo airline to our customer portfolio in the Americas. The region is an important growth market for us, where we want to further expand our leading role. We are very much looking forward to supporting the airline on its growth path with innovative ULD services,” stated Shailendra Kothari, Managing Director at Jettainer Americas Inc., at the press event in Miami.

Strong foothold in The Americas
The Mexican carrier is already the fifth airline in America to have its ULDs managed by Jettainer. This includes American Airlines, Canadian carrier, WestJet, which is currently setting up its own cargo division, Avianca Cargo and, for the transport of certain products, Delta Air Lines Cargo. This gives the ULD manager a very strong foothold in the market there.

Thanks to the growing network of mandate airlines, Jettainer meanwhile manages a fleet of approximately 100.000 Unit Load Devices worldwide. The global setup is combined with a local presence offering customers also a repair network in case of damages close to their operational processes.
