Cargo Bulls organize charity run in support of CHC

Since being kicked off by Lufthansa Cargo’s sports group “Cargo Bulls” in 2015, a Frankfurt-held evening run has taken place every year during summer – appreciated by a large and constantly growing number of participants.
This year, the run had to be cancelled due to the risk of Covid-19 infections. Instead, it is being held “virtually”, whereby participants can run individually and in any given place. Those wanting to take part, pay a participation fee (15 euros each) which goes to supporting Lufthansa Cargo's Cargo Human Care projects in Kenya.

The words of Fokko Doyen, Lufthansa Cargo captain and president of the Cargo Human Care (CHC) charity association, have always carried weight. In the current corona crisis, however, his call to participate in the Frankfurt run is more than just an appeal: it is about providing CHC’s foster children in Kenya and their relatives with sufficient nourishment in these difficult times.
So, what has the Frankfurt run got to do with this?
It is very simple: The admission fee of 15 euros requested from each starter benefits "Cargo Human Care e.V." directly. A CHC study revealed that the equivalent of 60 euros per month is enough to keep a family of 6 supplied with foodstuffs, helping them to master the crisis in one way or another.

Frankfurt run combats hunger
Fact is that CHC is in urgent need of support, since the corona pandemic forced the temporary closure of the facility's accommodation near Nairobi, and all 120 orphans normally living there and being cared for by local CHC staff, medics and humanitarian workers, had to be accommodated by relatives or known families in the interim. These are generally families who themselves hardly have enough money to live on. The situation is aggravated by the fact that many adults have lost their jobs as the Kenyan economy has sharply contracted since March when the pandemic started to spread. Simultaneously to the corona virus, a plague of locusts of unimaginable proportions hit parts of the country, destroying crops, and plunging locals into destitution.
Given these facts, CHC already launched a program named "Family Aid 2020" as early as March, in order to provide these needy people with sufficient food.

Not one, many runs
And at this point the running event in Frankfurt comes back on the agenda. In contrast to 2019, however, this year’s run cannot take place in reality. Instead, the Cargo Bull organizers are calling for a "virtual event", to avoid risking any Covid-19 infections.
Those who take part can choose between running distances of 5 or 10 kilometers or alternatively cycling over 30 or 50 km. The event can take place anywhere, so individual routes can be chosen as can the starting date.

From the very young to the very old
Anyone can participate: Individual starters - including children and young people -, groups such as school classes or sports teams, running groups or company departments. Elderly people of up to 100 years of age are also admitted provided they feel fit to cope with the physical challenge.
Once accomplished, the achieved results must be entered in a list containing different columns (length of chosen routes and times achieved) and must be uploaded. The outcome of the event, including the individual times achieved will be streamed live on the internet on 26AUG20, when a small award ceremony will round off the event.
